Game Recap
June: Rivercity in Raleigh!
Our travel teams, the River City Riots and the River City Rats, loaded up and made the trek out to Raleigh on June 1st. Excitement was very high as the teams geared up in the Dorton Arena. On the track first were The Riots taking on North Carolina’s All Star Team.
This was a beautifully matched game, and after some back and forth with point scoring in the beginning, by half time our Riots had pulled ahead. Even through some unfortunate penalties being served on our end, the defense brought by the Riots was very strong! One jam in particular, saw a 2 to 4 track disadvantage for our speedy jammer, Pixel Whip! With only Lizness and Boujee on the track to contend with the opposing jammer, she continued lapping and racking up the points! Giving the 4 opposing blockers a run for it. The Riots pulled off the win 104 to 90!
Of course, our B Travel team couldn’t be outdone! With the strongest teamwork we’ve seen all season, they started and finished against the Carolina Bootleggers so fiercely. The defensive walls were moved and reformed amazingly, and our jammers slipped through holes like water. At half time, the score was 182 for the Rats and 19 for the Bootleggers. Graceful Dredd really shone as a strong Jammer this game, with some beautiful apex jumps! Both Dredd and Iggy took home MVP Jammer and MVP Blocker respectively. The game concluded for a final score of 288 to 64!
June 22nd: River City vs. Bradentucky
Back on June 22nd at The Greater Richmond Convention Center, a few friends from Bradenton Florida came up to battle it out with us on the track. Up first, the all star teams, The Riots against the Bradentucky Bomb Squad! This was another fiercely competitive game that our A team took on. They kept themselves very collected and together on the track. There were some very nice strategic plays that come with high level games that were wonderful to watch, particularly with the star passes! It was awesome to see some of our Pivots take the jammer cover and run with them!
We saw a lot of lead changes in this game, it was a rollercoaster! Bradentucky Bomb Squad did take the win, with a final score of 132 to 149. So incredibly close! I’d love to see these two teams play again.
After that nailbiter of a game, we watched the Rats play the Bradentucky Bombers. Throughout the game, we saw great communication from our packs, who were doing a great job to hold back those jammers. There were some impressive apex jumps from jammers on both teams, and the crowd loved to see it. In the end, the Rats won, with a score of 87 to 179. Catch our next home game at the Convention Center!
RCRD Field Day
In June we held our first RCRD field day, open to league members and their families. It was incredibly well organized, and so much fun! There were lots of kiddos there, having a blast. There was lots of delicious food brought by team members, and popsicles to stay cool. We even had a Poe’s Punishers vs Hollywood Undertakers tug’o’war. Can’t wait to do it again next summer.
Pink Pony Skate Club
Do you know that feeling when you’re listening to Chappell Roan and thinking, “Why am I not roller skating right now?” Well, River City Roller Derby singlehandedly solved that well-known problem for about 350 Super Graphic Ultra Modern BBs when we painted the town pink at our Pink Pony Club Open Skate event on June 27th. We danced, scooted, and sang our hearts out to the entire Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess album from start to finish. For those of us who couldn’t get our hands on a very elusive ticket to Chappell’s sold-out show on Brown’s Island, this was THE event of the summer. The turnout was insane, and you looked great out there, Richmond! The rink was a sparkly sea of bubble gum, fuchsia, rose, cherry blossom, and every pink in between. By the time HOT TO GO! came on, there was only just enough room to wildly flail our arms around in what felt like a perfectly synchronized group hug. The only thing missing was Chappell herself, but I heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from Chappell that she was bummed she had to miss such a Femininomenon. Should we just go ahead and make Chappell an honorary Richmonder now?
