League History

River City Rollergirls was founded in spring 2006, and became a member league of the WFTDA in 2009. Pictured below are the Poe’s Punishers:

In 2014, RCR experienced a large transition as many of the league’s skaters retired or transferred.  RCR consolidated into one All-Star travel team (2016 team pictured below) and continued to compete for rankings within the WFTDA.

RCR underwent a revival in 2017, with a massive influx of both new and transferring skaters.  With new people came new ideas, including a new logo and rebranding to River City Roller Derby.  In 2018, the league had grown into two fully-rostered A & B teams, the Riots and River Rats (2019 teams shown below).

…then 2020 happened. And 2021.

After a two-year hiatus, RCRD came back to the track in 2022 and put in the work for an incredible season -
we hosted several successful events, reconnected with our RVA community, and even won a local tournament!

We hope that you’ll join us at a game, event, or open house/orientation this year!
