Roller derby would not be what it is today without the impact made by black skaters. In 1957, Darlene Anderson became the first black female professional roller derby player. She first joined the Brooklyn Red Devils and later played for many other teams throughout her career. She stayed home for games played in the segregated south for her safety and stated that in roller derby: "Myself being black, I don't think ever mattered to anyone as I was respected, treated by all skaters on an equal level, and I don't ever remember once that being black was an issue." She was awarded rookie of the year in 1958, retired in the 1970s and was inducted into the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 2009. The second black woman to go pro was Ruberta Mitchell in 1958, also signed to the Red Devils, after having only known about roller derby for two years. Her skills skyrocketed, quickly becoming one of the best players in the game. She was also inducted into the Roller Derby Hall of Fame in 2014. Commonly thought of as the best Canadian roller derby player, Gwen "Skinny Minnie" Miller started off with the LA Thunderbirds in 1969. She was a top-scoring player on and off for decades and was adored by players and fans for her joyful demeanor. She was inducted into the Roller Derby Hall of fame in 2022. Other black skaters inducted include: Delores Tucker, a strong blocker and jammer who was also named MVP in the multiple derby playoffs. Rosetta Saunders, a well-rounded player awarded rookie of the year in 1969. Another important mention is BeyonSlay (Jackie Helms) the namesake of the roller derby move "Slay Ride." Olympic gold medalist Erin Jackson, started out as a roller derby player and inline speed skater. Before ice speed skating, she played with Jacksonville Roller Derby starting in 2012 with jersey number 480 and earned an MVP title in the WFTDA division 1 playoffs in 2014.

It's Day One of Rookie Orientation for RCRD!
The core of RCRD is rooted in and exemplifies inclusivity, moral integrity, and equality amongst all members of our organization and community. To not speak out against the inhumane violence and discrimination perpetuated by ICE would mean to abandon our core values. We stand in solidarity with all peoples, their families and communities who have been or continue to be victimized by ICE. The most recent (by no means the first) murder of a peaceful protester Renee Nicole Good by ICE struck pain within our community and compels us to action.
If you too feel compelled to action, please consider supporting the community most recently afflicted by the heinous acts of ICE in Minneapolis, MN. Minneapolis’s own North Star Roller Derby league has compiled several opportunities for you to show your support in any way that you can. For more information on what you can do, hit the link below.
https://linktr.ee/nsrd
If you are local to Richmond you can also consider getting involved with @richmonddefensa to find a protest near you or to donate to their mutual aid fund.
Want to join roller derby but don't want to get hit? Come be a referee or a non-skating official! These positions are essential for making roller derby bouts possible (plus you still get to have a cool derby name.) 😎
Don't know if you'd rather be a player or a ref yet? Come anyway! You can decide as you progress. 💯
Please fill out the form under "Rookie Registration" in our bio before orientation! It is not required to attend both orientation sessions, but try to come to both if you’re able.

Land Acknowledgement
River City Roller Derby lives, practices, and bouts on land that is stolen from the Powhatan Nation of American Indians. The Powhatan are a collection of tribes whose language is a branch of Eastern Algonquian. Before their displacement by English settlers in the 1700s the Powhatan were a confederation of 30 tribes covering much of the tidewater region in present day eastern Virginia including Richmond, Virginia. Despite deliberate and sustained efforts to erase the Powhatan people and their culture by English settlers, and later the United States government, 6 federally recognized tribes from the Powhatan nation still exist today in Virginia: Chickahominy Indian Tribe, Chickahominy Indian Tribe–Eastern Division, Nansemond Indian Nation, Pamunkey Indian Tribe, Rappahannock Tribe, Upper Mattaponi Tribe. There are many additional tribes in Virginia that do not have federal recognition. Their existence must not be diminished by their lack of governmental recognition.
RCRD would like to take a moment to acknowledge the historic and ongoing stewardship of the Powhatan people over Virginian land as well as their longstanding resilience against injustice and oppression.
Please consider learning more about their people and culture from the following resources.
Also please consider supporting them financially by supporting local, indigenous artists.
