Do you think you are smarter than a Derby player?

Put your knowledge to the test at our trivia night, Tuesday, February 25 at Studio Two Three in Manchester! You don’t need to be a roller derby genius to play, we will have a variety of categories.

There’s a rumor Steve Harvey himself might be hosting!

All proceeds from this night goes to our travel teams! So buckle on those thinking caps and stop on by.

Check out our Facebook event for more details.

Rocktown Recap

Rocktown Roller Derby Triumphs in February Scrimmages

In a thrilling display of athleticism, River City Roller Derby hosted two closed scrimmages on February 9th, showcasing fierce competition. There were a lot of laughs, a lot of fun, and tough opponents.

First Scrimmage: River City Rats vs. Rocktown A Team

The opening bout featured the River City Rats facing off against Rocktown's B Team. Despite a valiant effort, the River City Rats were outpaced scoring 95 points to Rocktown's 175.

Second Scrimmage: River City’s Home Team and Rocktown’s skaters mix scrimmage.

The second game of the morning was a real wild act as the first and second half of the game changed. The first half was the up and coming River City Home team powerhouses versus Rocktown skaters. The Home team smashed it out of the park on their first taste of competition of the year. The second half was a melting pot of both River City and Rocktown players on both sides of the benches. FUN was the name of this game as it ended with laughter and encouragement.

Shout out to our new Riots!

Team Spotlight

Lenni Scabitz

League Role: River City Rat

How long have you been playing Derby?
2 years

How long have you been with RCRD?
2 years

Favorite Position?
Jammer

How'd you pick your derby name?
In my non-derby world I am a horticulturist and am known as Lenni, a shortname for my first name (Millennium). I was also the kid, everybody knows at least one, that never sat down and always scraped their knees or ended up with a scab of some sorts, cursed mulch and asphalt. When I started park skating around 2019 there was another major shift in the scab to healthy skin ratio, concrete has no remorse. So… when I started to think on derby names I knew I wanted part of it to be a nickname I have already grown to know. Otherwise, I would look someone dead in their eyes as they called “my name” and be completely unfazed. With all of this in mind I thought …why not pay homage to one of my favorite pioneers of rock, Lenny Kravitz, through my relentless efforts to wreak havoc <3 Lenni Scabitz (Pro-Union)

Roller derby "origin story"?
My friends were tired of me shaking them (on the x-axis) so they sent me a flyer for the 2023 rookie cycle as a constructive outlet to release my frustrations towards their foolishness. Before then I had only seen short clips of Derby from the 80s that went viral on the web.

What's something you really struggled with when you started out, but feel good about now?
Throwing Bone! I struggled with intentional contact versus absorbing impact, but now I feel better about swinging my hips and driving with my shoulder. I am definitely still working on absorbing and countering the latter from fellow players, so I’m not airborne as often.

Favorite thing to do after a hard practice?
Listen to Deli Girls or Knocked Loose… and yell :)

Favorite derby memory?
Getting tattooed with half of the team while in Orlando for a Riot and Rats game.

How has derby positively impacted you off the track?
Derby has boosted my mental health for a number of reasons. The first being that it connected me to some of my close friends. Being apart of a team also makes it a bit easier to hold myself accountable for taking my physical health seriously. Derby has also helped me break out of some of my comfort zones and is continuously teaching me how to actively engage in community.
